Following flooding events in 2022, embankment sections of Kempsey - Armidale Road experienced localised landslides. At the very likely risk of the road being rendered impassable due to regression of the landslides - emergency works needed to be undertaken.
CLIENT: Armidale Regional Council (ARC)
LOCATION: Armidale Rd, NSW
DESIGN: Soil nail wall build-out, slope re-profiling, down-slope drilling, rope access systems
Following floodingevents in February and March 2022, embankment sections of Kempsey - ArmidaleRoad experienced localised landslides. Regression of the landslides, to such anextent as the road would have been impassable, waslikely if emergency remedial works were not undertaken. Therefore, remediationof the slope and re-instatement of the old road alignment was required on both the downslope and upslope.
The method selected by GeotechnicalEngineers was a soil nail wall with build out, to recover the loss of ground. The shotcrete facing was installed at around 70° vertical below road level inthe slip sections and around 40° in non-slip sections with tie-ins to existingslopes. RIX Asset Maintenance (RAM), who specialise in completing these typesof difficult access works, with their experienced workforce and specialistplant, had been contracted to undertake the installation of soil nails, slopereprofiling and shotcrete wall build outs. RAM provided a flexible,multi-disciplined team of up to 25 personnel at short notice to deliver theproject in this challenging and remote location.
