A substantial landslide cut off access to Megalong Valley. RAM were firstly engaged to help reinstate single lane access and avoid further slippage. In phase 2 - RAM’s rope access team and specialist plant worked to reinstate the 28-ton load limit on the road.

In April 2024, there was a substantial landslide on Megalong Road near Blackheath, NSW, cutting off access to Megalong Valley. An evacuation of approximately 200 visitors trapped in the Megalong Valley was completed immediately however residence were unable to get out. After a geotechnical assessment of the badly damaged road, RAM were engaged to complete the emergency works starting with the phase one reinstatement of single lane access and re-divergence of water to avoid further slippage. ail and shotcrete build out utilising a highly skilled team of rope access technicians and specialist drilling equipment. The flooding event on 5 April has been declared a natural disaster Phase two of the works then began to support the road approximately 40 m either side of the main slip. Once again, these works involved a combination of soil nails and shotcrete, ensuring the slopes were controlled. RAM’s highly experienced rope access team and specialist plant was utilised again to complete this work over two months to reinstate the 28-ton load limit on the road. The 28-ton load reinstatement was a critical milestone for the Megalong Valley community, enabling deliveries to the businesses and residents in the valley.
The contract involved the remediation and strengthening of approx. 120m long slope which we divided into 3 zones. Through a combination of rock face scaling, soil nailing and shotcrete the load limit was reinstated to 28-ton. Construction activities were undertaken with our highly experienced rope access team in often challenging winter conditions. Light weight drilling equipment suspended down the slope was used to avoid any loading of the unstable road.
