Tamborine Emergency Works After Extreme Rain Event, QLD

After an extreme rain event in December 2020, large rockfall events occurred made Tamborine Road impassable to motorists. Emergency response was required and once initial work was done to made the area safe, RAM worked closely with Road Tek to develop a Rock Fall Protection System for permanent works.

Scaling and Rock Fall Protection System

CLIENT: Transport for Main Roads (RoadTek)

LOCATION: Tamborine, QLD

COMPLETION: 2021

DESIGN:  Air Bag Scaling, Hand Scaling, Rock Bolts, Shotcrete, Rope Access

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In December 2020, a one-in-100-year event occurred. In a six-hour period the Tamborine area received significant rainfall from an intense low-pressure system within excess of 300mm. The intense Rainfall caused several slopes to subside, and large Rock Fall events occurred damaging roads and making Tamborine Road impassable to the motorists.

Emergency response was required and once initial work was done to made the area safe, a solution was required for permanent works.

SOLUTION

At the tail-end of the low pressure cell passing, RAM undertook area wide inspections with Road Tek to identify slopes that required mitigation to make safe. The early response by Road Tek and RAM allowed for Rapid mobilisation of experienced IRATA Geotechnical Personnel.

RAM mobilised a highly skilled IRATA Rope Access Team and worked with Geotechnical Engineers to identify areas to be hand scaled and made safe. Large boulders more than 10m3 were removed by airbags and featured on National News Broadcasts nationwide. Spot bolts were installed with Cliff Face Drilling equipment and shotcrete applied from EWP and Rope Access.

RAM worked together with Road Tek to plan and provide a Rock Fall Protection System for permanent works which followed the initial emergency response. Considerable hours were worked over a period of six months without incident.
