Installation of Rockfall Protection systems to protect road users from Geotechnical Hazards
ROCKFALL PROTECTION SYSTEMS
CLIENT: FULTON HOGAN
LOCATION: GREAT OCEAN ROAD, VIC
DESIGN: DRILLING, ROCKFALL DRAPES
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The Great Ocean Road is an icon tourist attraction and an important part of Regional Roads Victoria infrastructure. Completed in 1922 the road was cut into the steep terrain that rises steeply out of the ocean and many locations are subject to rock fall and landslide. The slope remediation work is designed to maintain reliable and safe road function by reducing the risk of any slope failure and rock fall.
SOLUTION
Through Rope Access scaling and a combination of Geobrugg Deltax Mesh Drape and rock bolts the rockfall hazard risk was mitigated. Construction activities were undertaken primarily with our highly experienced rope access team as some work areas were up to 45m above the road. RAM elected to utilise one of our specialised 30m High Reach Drills to perform most of the drilling and rockfall mesh installation. This High Reach Drill was highly efficient due to being mobile and quick to move between sites. Above 30m height drilling was done using a Wagon Drill suspended from temporary anchors.
